It has memory card emulation, broadband adapter emulation for online games, you can force progressive scan and 16:9 widescreen. For example, there is a patch for Super Mario 64 DS that adds analog camera control. Some applications can be patched using homebrew. Information can be found on sites like GameBanana and GBATemp (I don't want to link to them here - for various reasons) There is sizeable support for modding Super Smash Bros with new skins, characters and other tweaks. Take for example Mario Kart 8 Ultimate, which is a collection of mods that adds 100+ courses to the original Wii U game. SD Caffeine allows you to tell the system to load resources from your SD card rather than the game disc or internal memory - which opens up a world of modding. In some homebrew environments you can also run an always-on FTP server for transfer from other devices. It's effectively a package manager / repo for popular homebrew apps. To save you from having to swap SD cards to and from your computer all of the time, you can download certain apps directly from an app store.
